Welcome to Friends of Toowong Cemetery

The Friends of Toowong Cemetery is a voluntary organisation of people with a special interest in the Toowong Cemetery (formally known as the Brisbane General Cemetery), located in Toowong, Brisbane, Australia.

The Toowong Cemetery is the largest cemetery in Queensland and is an important record of the history of Brisbane and Queensland. It was officially opened in July 1875 and over 117,000 people are buried there. Toowong Cemetery is an operating cemetery. We are consulted by the Brisbane City Council in decisions regarding future planning, new initiatives, restoration of graves.

The FOTC hold meetings usually on the last Wednesday evening of the month.  Guided walks in the cemetery are held on the first Sunday of the month at 10.30am (except January).  Dates and copies of previous walk booklets can be downloaded from here. Legacy Way Tunnel - Gravestone preservation activities

Transcity has started construction of Legacy Way at the western worksite, on the northern side of the Western Freeway, Toowong. In preparation for early works, Transcity is undertaking preservation activities to protect approximately 70 gravestones identified as structurally unsound due to their age and existing condition. These gravestones are located in portions 11 and 24 of the cemetery, near Mt Coot-tha Road.  All work is undertaken by qualified stonemasons under the direction of heritage experts. These important activities commenced in early May 2011For further information on affected gravestones please visit http://www.legacyway.com.au/construction/cultural-heritage/toowong-cemetery or contact Transcity's Community Relations Team on 1800 778 772.
